Frequently asked questions:
We do not offer horseback riding, guiding or outfitting services.
1) Could you please explain about meals and the 'kitchen available' concept?
The Ranch is rather remote and the only reasonable place to eat is here. I am not a particularly good cook. A solution to this problem is the 'kitchen available' concept that many European and English travelers are familiar with. I provide a nice modern kitchen with all the utensils, basic seasonings and condiments that one normally finds in a kitchen. You bring the main ingredients for the meals you would like to prepare (or provide me with a grocery list with enough advance notice and I will have the groceries here when you arrive). I take care of the clean-up!
2) How do I check for availability and make a booking?
I do bookings the old fashioned way. You can call me at 775-761-7777 or text me at 775-761-0077 or send me an email. I will get back to you promptly.
3) What about beverages?
I don't have a retail liquor license here at the Ranch. But I do have a great place to hang out and have a couple cold ones. It is called the Dream Catcher Saloon. It is the second life of a historic mobile bank building which served central Nevada in the 1970's. BYOB (saving a bunch of money) and enjoy the rustic setting of an old time saloon. Or you can just sit on the porch of the main cabin.
4) How will we find the place?
While the road to the Ranch is a well maintained road and suitable for most vehicles, it still is about 35 miles of dirt. I meet all my guests at the end of the pavement and caravan to the Ranch. Depending on which direction you are coming from, there are three different meeting spots. When you are ready to make plans call me at 775-761-7777 or text me at 775-761-0077 or send me an email. We will then coordinate the time and place to meet.
5) What is your pet policy?
In general I do not allow pets. There are a number of animals at the Ranch. I have a responsibility to them for there safety and general well being. There are also pet hazards at the Ranch that your pet may not recognize.
6) I have allergies, will I have problems there?
Sometimes a cat and some dogs have been allowed in the main house. They are not allowed in any of the bedrooms. While you are here no animals will be allowed in. As to pollen allergies I have a reaction to rabbit brush in the spring and again in the fall. We don't have 'valley fever' like a lot of the south west.
7) What about bugs?
There is not much of a bug issue here at the Ranch. Rarely bothered by mosquitoes, horseflies, scorpions or other obnoxious critters. Ticks are incredibly rare. On fairly rare occasions we will suffer a spell of the little bugs called 'no see ums'. They only are interested in making you miserable if you are trying to get work done while you are sweating. Sitting on the porch with beverage in hand does not make you a target.
It is a log home, you likely will see the occasional spider. We do not have the killer kind lurking around the place.
8) How young is too young for children?
Toddlers to 8 years old are at risk to the various hazards of steps, pond, animals and the various unfamiliar environments of a ranch setting. I do not recommend children in that age range unless you are prepared to watch them closely and assume liability for their well being.
9) Will we be entirely cut off from the rest of the world?
You can be if you want to be. But, while your cell phones will not work within 30 miles of the ranch, I have wireless internet and a phone available for calls to anywhere in the US free of charge.
10) What is the worst thing most likely to happen during our visit?
Playing cards with me.
